How to Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus

On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. The virus can make people sick with a light running nose. It can also make people sick with respiratory issues and also pneumonia and some need to be hospitalized. COVID-19 has infected around 4 lac people and killed almost 17000 people around the globe. In India, around 400+ people have tested positive out of which few are foreigners. Some measures that can be undertaken to prevent the spread.

Basic Measures

There are several measures to protect yourself and others from getting the coronavirus. Frequently clean your hands by using an alcohol-based hand rub product like a gel or wash your hands with soap and water. Following this protocol will kill viruses that may be on your hands. While sneezing and coughing, use a tissue or cover your mouth and nose with flexed elbow. Discard the used tissue immediately into a closed bin.

Avoid close contact with anyone that has cough and fever. If you have fever, cough and difficulty in breathing, seek medical care as soon as possible. Share information about recent travels with the healthcare authorities. If you just have mild respiratory symptoms and no specific travel history, carefully follow the precautions explained above. Make sure you stay under self-quarantine.

Maintain Distancing

A distance of at least 3 feet from a person sneezing or coughing is advised to be maintained. It is because when someone sneezes or coughs, they spray small respiratory droplets from their mouth or nose. If the person sneezing or coughing is diagnosed with COVID-19, those respiratory droplets may also include traces of the virus. These respiratory droplets may contain the virus and if someone is too close, may breathe in it. Also, one should avoid shaking hands, hugging or kissing people with these symptoms. If someone needs to take care of the person who has fever, cough and difficult breathing, do not forget to wear a mask and in particular to practice hand hygiene.

Respiratory Hygiene

The virus can be spread through respiratory droplets. If proper respiratory hygiene is followed one can prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19, flu and cold. As soon as you fall sick, seek for medical attention and call in advance. Follow the protocols provided by the local health authorities. These authorities will possess the most up to date information related to the virus. Right health facilities can be provided quickly if you call in advance. Following the prescribed protocols will prevent the spread of viruses.
