Affordable housing, a myth or a reality?

 

“India lives in its villages.”

 

Was a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. It was a reference to the percentage of population living in the rural areas. A study in 2011 suggested that close to 68% of the Indian population lived in the rural areas. But these numbers and the statement have been challenged of late. For even though 68% of the Indian population lived in rural areas in 2011, just a decade ago this number was 72%. This means the population of urban India has grown at a rate of 2.8% per annum from 2001 to 2011. Also, for the first time since independence the rise in population in urban areas has eclipsed the rise in rural areas.
