Market update 18th May 2020. SENSEX crashes 1,069 points on a volatile day.


Overall performance:

After the government announced details of Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package, for the third consecutive day Indian indices ended on a lower note. At close, SENSEX was down by 1,068.75 points or 3.44% closing at 30,028.98 and NIFTY was down by 313.60 points or 3.43% closing at 8,823.25. While, the S&P BSE midcap index fell by 445.15 points or 3.87%, closing at 11,055.17 and S&P BSE Small cap declined by 312.55 points or 2.92%, closing at 10,376.31. NIFTY Midcap 100 closed at 12,409.35, down by 582.70 points or 4.49% and NIFTY Small cap 100 closed at 3,804.90, down by 130.20 points or 3.31%.


Global indices:

When Indian market closed, DAX was trading at 10,749.56, up by 287.16 points or 2.74%, NASDAQ was trading at 9,014.56 up by 70.84 points or 0.79% and CAC was trading at 4,366.26, up by 2.07% or 88.63 points. While, SGX Nifty was down by 322 points or 3.54% and trading at 8,785.50.



Currently, Gold is trading at 47,858 up by 489 points and 1.03%, Silver is trading at 48,552 up by 1,834 points and 3.94% and Crude oil is trading at 2,429 which is up by 162 points and 7.15%.



At the closing time of Indian indices, USD was trading at Rs 75.91, up by 0.35%. EURO was trading at Rs 82.20, up by 0.24% and GBP was trading at Rs 92.19, up by 0.60%. Indian Rupee ended higher by 0.46% at Rs 75.9075 per Dollar.


Sector wise:

Sector wise, the S&P BSE Auto index declined by 717.28 points and S&P BSE IT increased by 181.72 points or 1.36%. At closing, NIFTY BANK fell by 1,260.75 points or 6.69%, closing at 1,260.75 while, NIFTY IT increased by 118.05 points or 0.89%.


Top 5 gainers:

Share price of Cipla increased by 30.15 points or 5.29%, closing at Rs 600.45, TCS share price increased by 52.70 points or 2.78%, closing at Rs 1945.60, Bharti infratel gained 2.27% or 4.60 points, closing at Rs 207.10, Infosys was up by 11.60 points or 1.78%, closing at Rs 663.90 and ITC was up by 0.06%, closing at Rs 164.75.


Top 5 losers:

Today, stocks of financial and banking sector declined the most. IndusInd Bank declined by 41.95 points or 10.02%, closing at Rs 376.75, Zee entertain decreased by 14.70 points or 8.95%, closing at Rs 149.50. Eicher motors fell by 1,111.40 points or 7.88% and closed at Rs 12988.20. Share price of UltraTechCement declined by 275.35 points or 7.68%, closing at Rs 3307.80 and Axis bank fell by 29.75 points or 7.66%, closing at Rs 358.80.


Stock in news:

In terms of volume, most active stocks were Vodafone idea, BHEL, Vedanta, SBI, ICICI Bank and Tata Motors. Today, Nippon was in news as share price of the company fell by 14.70 points or 6.03%, closing at Rs 229.20. The main reason behind this drop in share price is the company’s sharp decline in the profitability for the March quarter. As the government extended lock down, stock price of aviation sector declined globally and share price of spice jet was down by 5% and reached the lower circuit on BSE, closing at Rs 43.35.
