Julian Robertson moved to New York City and started working as a stockbroker for the Kidder, Peabody &co. He headed the firm’s asset management division at Kidder. He established the investment firm Tiger Management Corp. in 1980. He is credited with turning the start-up capital of $8 million in 1980 to over $22 billion in the 1990s.
In 1998 the Tiger fund was on top with assets of $22 billion. Julian Robertson’s firm suffered loss because of wrong selection of stock and failure to make use of technology and in 1999 the S&P-500 index climbed by 21% but the tiger fund declined by 19 %.
