Julian Robertson was born on June 25, 1932, in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1955, he completed his degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina. Until 1957 he served as an officer in the US Navy.

Julian Robertson moved to New York City and started working as a stockbroker for the Kidder, Peabody &co. He headed the firm’s asset management division at Kidder. He established the investment firm Tiger Management Corp. in 1980.  He is credited with turning the start-up capital of $8 million in 1980 to over $22 billion in the 1990s.

In 1998 the Tiger fund was on top with assets of $22 billion. Julian Robertson’s firm suffered loss because of wrong selection of stock and failure to make use of technology and in 1999 the S&P-500 index climbed by 21% but the tiger fund declined by 19 %.

Julian Robertson said that his biggest mistake was to make an investment in the U.S. Airways. This mistake led him to close the Tiger Funds on March 2000.
